RPGs are typically conducted as a hobby in which players meet in person, often in groups, to assume the roles of characters in a fictional setting. Unlike actors or audience members engaged in a theatrical performance, role-players “play” their characters as these characters might act in the fictional setting.
For example, they may be called upon to play a peasant knight who is the son of the local baron, who is trying to marry a fierce dragon that has been attacking villages. In this game the characters would set off on an adventure together, facing many perils along the way.
Role-playing games have been used as a tool in many fields, including education and training, with the goal of improving knowledge and skills by simulating a realistic environment.
